Last night I went uptown to a sort of coming-out party the Obama headquarters was having. Much excitement, people spilling out onto the sidewalk, nice suburbanite families going away with Obama signs on wire frames to stick in the ground at home. I fought my way in, fended off several attempts to recruit me as a volunteer, and bought a sign and two bumper stickers. I was taken aback at having to pay for the promotional materials, but I was talking on the phone later about it and was told that this ensures you'll actually use the signs and stickers you take.
"Oh," I said. "Like a co-pay. I thought they just wanted the money."
I should assure everyone that my feeling that Obama's the best of the lot isn't because I'm swooning over him. I'm not writing his name over and over in my notebook. It's not that I think he's the coolest guy in the race. Look, I voted for Al Gore, whom Calvin Trillin called a "manlike object." I just think Obama shows encouraging signs of not being insane. Emotional intelligence—it's a good thing, in a leader. Hillary is a bit too much of a Type-A personality, the "A" in this case standing for "Ahab."
